On June 21-22, 2021, the Heart Center hosted a master class on implantation of a new type of valve used in the transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI)

The Heart Center hosted a master class on the introduction of a new type of valve for TAVI surgery called Portico from Abbott in the presence of Fadi J. Sawayai, a proctor for implantation using this valve.

TAVI is a transcatheter implantation of the aortic valve. It is performed in cases of stenosis (narrowing) of the aortic valve. It is through this valve that the heart sends blood to the aorta and further throughout the body.

«Today, in our Center, we are implanting three types of valves,» says Abdurashid Mussayev, head of the catheterization laboratory of the Heart Center. «The introduction of a new valve into our practice will expand our capabilities and help even more patients. The individual characteristics of the valve and the differences between their manufacturers lead to the fact that different types of valves are used for different groups of patients. Therefore, the increase in valve varieties in our arsenal gives us the opportunity to approach the treatment of each patient more individually.»

Also, within the framework of cooperation, a delegation of doctors from Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and Shymkent arrived at the Heart Center. The master class was also attended by specialists of interventional cardiology from the Hospital of the Medical Centre Hospital of President’s Affairs Administration of RK, Nur-Sultan.

During the master class, 12 operations were successfully performed. All patients feel great and will be discharged soon. Abdurashid Mussayev noted the advantages of TAVI: «The average age of patients who had this valve implanted was 75 years. Conducting an «open» operation in this group of patients carries serious risks due to age, the presence of chronic diseases and complex rehabilitation. TAVI is a minimally invasive operation that is performed under local anesthesia. Rehabilitation after TAVI is fast: patients are observed for several days and then discharged.»
